Okay folks! It took us moving out to a few acres to realize that you really don't NEED a ton of space to grow your own food. Yes, it's a smidge easier, but it's not vital. You can do a ton with a little bit of space, so whether you have a small yard, or just a patio, here are a few tips to help you to garden in a relatively small space.
Use What You Have
If you have a small plot of land, then your best option will be to start off with a small garden. You don’t have to have a giant garden to get enjoyment from gardening. Instead, you can take care of just a couple of plants in a space where you know they can thrive—like a balcony or a window where they can get plenty of light. If you enjoy taking care of these plants and find that you are good at it, then expand later. If you have pets, be sure that your plants are pet-friendly.
Get The Right Equipment
If you are working in a small space, you probably don't have a lot of gardening equipment. You will likely need some gardening tools, nothing too elaborate, but something practical for your needs. A good suggestion is also to use as much vertical space as you can. That’s why a vertical storage unit for your tools and materials is a good investment.
Go Mobile
If your backyard is too small or not viable, see if there is a local community garden where you can tend a plot. If you do choose this option, you are going to want to find a way to make your tools and materials mobile. Gardening carts are a great option because you can store your materials and then use the cart as a seat to help take the strain off of your knees and back.
Look For Creative Spaces In Your Home
Yes, a windowsill or a fire escape are traditional spots for growing plants in an apartment. But there are some overlooked and ignored places in the home like your bathroom. Some plants will thrive in the humidity and moisture of a bathroom environment, and this is one spot you can utilize.
You can also use areas without a lot of sunlight if you choose plants that prefer this condition. These types of plants should do well in your bedroom, living room, or kitchen provided you remember to keep them watered regularly.
Take Advantage of Vertical Spaces
There are a ton of great options for vertical gardening these days. You can think more simply with pots and shelves, or hanging planters. One other popular option these days is a vertical garden planter like this one. Either way, going up can really make a big difference!
Do Your Research
Understand the physical attributes and needs of the plants you want to include in your small garden. Plants that tend to grow spaciously are not good options. Neither are plants that struggle if they don't have space for their root structure. Herbs tend to do well in tiny spaces. Be certain that you are familiar with what each plant needs before incorporating it into your small space garden.
Just because you have a small space doesn't mean you can't keep a garden. Be creative and put that green thumb into practice. Any space, regardless of size, can be made into a wonderful mini-paradise by anyone with a vision and by using the right tools and decorative layout.
