When you are out in the garden, the sun is beating down on you and your fingers, and probably your knees, are in the dirt.  It's important to wear clothing that lets you move easily, is breathable and also gives you some protection from the elements.  From head to toe, here is what you should be wearing for a productive and safe day in the garden.

Hat: It's important to protect your face and your eyes from sun damage.  Chose something that has a wide enough brim to shade your face, such as a baseball cap or straw hat.  For added protection, don't forget your sunglasses and sunscreen!

Work Pants: Chose pants that fit comfortably but aren't too loose.  Work pants with reinforcement in the knees and/or seat is also a plus.  Some suggestions: Red Ants Pants have a lower rise in the front but a higher rise in the back, so you have no chance of indecent exposure; Rosies have removable kneepads.  Also, Carhart is a great brand for work pants.

Cotton Shirt: Cotton is a breathable fabric and will help you feel cool on those hotter days.  Sleeve length depends on what you are comfortable with or what garden chores you will be doing.

Gloves: Be sure to wear gloves that are appropriate for the task.  If you are pruning or using tools with wooden handles, gloves can provide some protection.  Gloves will also keep your hands and nails a bit cleaner when digging around in the dirt, plus, your cuticles will thank you.

Garden Apron: With all the pockets, garden aprons will help you to carry all your tools and seed packets around.

Shoes: Make sure to wear shoes that are both comfortable but also provide the support and protection you need (no open toes!).  Wearing shoes that are washable also make it easy to clean your shoes after a long day in the dirt.  And there are plenty of boots, clogs and wellies to choose from, even ones with fun patterns!
